Introducing the Teachers of Beastie Hall: Meet Mrs. Wordy

Introducing The Teachers Of Beastie Hall Meet Mrs Wordy Thumb

Mrs. Wordy’s Word Play Classroom takes on serious business—word analysis—but as with all the Beastie Hall teachers, she does her work in a way that’s fun and engaging for children. By explicitly showing young readers how to break words into syllables and put them back together, Mrs. Wordy is helping them learn to read longer, more difficult words. The focus in her classroom is on:

  • Morphology
  • Syllabication
  • Inflectional Endings
  • Prefixes and Suffixes

Strategies in the Word Play Classroom including Spot, Split, Read and Look, Split, Read help children learn to identify morphemes—or word parts—such as inflectional endings, syllables, prefixes, and suffixes.

Games like Word Sort, Word Web, and Building Big Words teach children to group words according to common parts, to build new words, and even to determine meaning based on a familiar prefix or suffix.
